L.A. County Library 2013 Bookmark Contest

 

The 34th annual L.A. County Library Children's Bookmark competition is now open!

 

Families can pick up an entry form at any L.A. County Library or download a form to print at home here. Contest is open to children in kindergarten through 12th grade. Deadline to enter is Thursday, October 19, 2013. Each library will have it's own winner. Wizard of Oz Celebration: Shops at Montebello, 9/21

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Wizard of Oz, the Shops at Montebello will recreate the Emerald City on Saturday, September 21st from 12pm to 1:30pm in Center Court.

At the celebration, families can participate in a variety of imaginative The Wizard of Oz inspired activities to revel in the charming tradition of the YELLOW BRICK ROAD^TM. Children who attend will receive a map, which leads to various stations that feature viewings of The Wizard of Oz film clips, craft-making and coloring activities, cut-out character photo opportunities and exclusive movie-focused giveaways. Children who wear a Wizard of Oz themed costume will receive a free Rubie’s Red Trick-or-Treat pail, while supplies last.

Lego Store Two Extra Freebie Events for October!!

In addition to the monthly mini-model build on the first Tuesday of the month, the Lego Store will host two extra events in October that include fun freebies!

Thursday, October 10 at 5pm kids can build a Lego Fire Plane Model.

Thursday, October 31 kids in costume can pick up a Monster key chain.

Halloween is 49 days away. You may think it's too early to think about costumes, but if you ask your kids, they've probably been thinking about their costume since November 1, 2012.

This month stores at the Shops at Montebello are receiving their stock of Halloween costumes. Kid Halloween-themed events occur throughout the month of October, including a special Wizard of Oz themed event on 9/21 at the Shops at Montebello. For the best selection of costumes you'll want to head out this month to find the perfect costume for your little munchkin!

Claire's is a treasure trove of items to turn your daughter into a Hollywood Starlet, Nerd, Vampress, Cat, Ladybug, or Beauty Queen. From crowns, to false glitter eyelashes, to pearls, Claire's has a lot of costume goods for Halloween and was my first stop.

For a little girl I found this Kid's Circus Tutu from Claire's for $12 that would serve perfectly for the costume base of a clown, fairy, or princess! Top it with bright leggings, t-shirt, add a wand, crown, or red clown nose and she's set for Halloween!

Bicycle Safety Class: Norwalk, Saturday, 9/7

I received the following email from Andrew Yip, Program Coordinator for Bike San Gabriel Valley. His organization is offering Bicycle Safety Courses. The first 12 participants will receive a helmet and bicycle light at the completion of the 3-hour course. Participants must be at least 18 years old and need to bring a bicycle to class.

There is a class scheduled for Saturday, 9/7 in Norwalk. Other classes are available throughout the San Gabriel Valley.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) received a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to spearhead a series of  "Need to Know" Bicycle Safety Courses throughout Los Angeles County.

The course teaches participants how to ride a bicycle safely and legally in the streets. There will be classroom instruction, parking lot drills and a ride in the streets to put our skills to the test. Participants that finish will receive a set of bicycle lights, helmet and many more freebies.

Space is limited to 12 participants per course and is on a first come, first serve basis. Must be at least 18 years of age and bring a bike to participate.
