MontebelloMom's
TIPS for Visiting the OC FAIR
  1. If the Fair Drive exit off the 55 South is congested, take the following exit at 22nd Street. Make a right at the signal then follow the signs leading to the fair gates.
  2. The fair grounds are 4 miles from the ocean. When the sun sets it gets downright chilly. My husband and I felt okay, but 71 degrees for a toddler is cold. Bring sweaters if you plan to stay the evening.
  3. Ride tickets are 50 cents each at the fair. There is no quantity discount. Rides require 6-12 tickets. For your convenience there are strolling vendors wearing flags in the ride area selling tickets.
  4. Kiddie rides have a 36" height requirement and some ride don't allow kids to ride alone unless they are 42" tall.
  5. Combine any of the promotions above and save big at the OC Fair.

MontebelloMom Gives Pokemon Go a go

I downloaded the Pokemon Go! to my phone yesterday, and I've got to say the app gives a whole new purpose to summer vacation.

The app is free to download and offers in-app purchases at the PokeShop, but purchases are not necessary to play and the game is free of pop-up ads.

I really like the game, it's similar to finding real-life hidden Geocaches with GPS, but a lot easier. To play the game simply open the app on your phone and walk. You can walk anywhere, but it's best to be in a public place, like a park or mall. As you walk poke-things will pop up on the screen for you to gather.

Looking back I wish I had all my kids around me when I first opened the app, because playing the game is a family affair and the background story, choosing an avatar, and name are only available at the initial opening of the app.

Pokemon on th
After googling, "How to Play Pokemon Go!" I came across this Pokemon 101 article that was very helpful in learning how to catch the pokemon and get more poke-stuff.

If you are worried about your children becoming obsessed with the game you can use the game as a reward to be earned. Know that kids should not venture out on their own, parental supervision is required since the game requires walking over great distances.

Right now I'm off to the mall with my kids. We have to walk 5km before one of our poke-eggs will hatch.

When you get close to a local landmark spin the image to collect poke-supplies.

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: My Review

Allow me to introduce you to Marie Kondo, Japanese cleaning consultant, and best-selling author of  The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. She is my new organizing guru, and the real deal.

According to Ms. Kondo, once you follow her methods of organizing you will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, have to organize again.

The reason? You'll love being organized so much you won't allow yourself to become disorganized again.

Marie Kondo has spent her life working on finding an organizing strategy that works for everyone. After years of trial and error she figured it out and wrote it up for the world to follow in her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.

Since I started de-cluttering in January I have easily donated or thrown away 50+ bags and boxes of things that are no longer needed from my home. Nearly every weekend my trash cans are full and I make monthly donation trips to Goodwill.

I can honestly say that Marie Kondo's methods have changed the way I think about organizing my home; I can find things easier, we don't lose things as often, and it takes less time to pick up the house at the end of the day.

If you want to get organized for good pick up a copy of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, via the Amazon links here. If you make a purchase through one of the affiliate links on this article you will also help support the MontebelloMom.com webpage at no additional charge to you.

Here are the new ideas I learned from Marie Kondo's The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing:

_________________________________________
1. Only you can organize your things.

The way you want your things arranged only makes sense to you. If you hire a professional organizer to put everything in order for you, you will not be able to keep it up because it's not the way you would have done it yourself. Besides children, whom you can assist, you cannot organize someone else's belongings. It's also not fair to decide for someone else what they do and do not need.

Ms. Kondo says if you share a home with others you can only organize yourself, but the others will soon jump in with the organizing process once they see how wonderful you keep your belongings.

I didn't buy that concept at all, however after I organized my things on the bookcase Mr. Montebello started organizing his side of the bookshelf! It was truly amazing, especially since I didn't ask him to do it! It was a Marie Kondo miracle!

 _________________________________________

2. Your home gets messy because the things you keep do not have a home.

If a space is always cluttered it's because you have no place for those particular items to be; you place them anywhere, or create a pile of junk for things with no home. Find a permanent place to store homeless items and you will always have a clear corners, countertops, shelves, and tables.

My family has a water bottle problem. We have well over a dozen water bottles, and only a few match. There are so many I store them wherever there is space, even the windowsill!

Yesterday, I got fed up and sat down in front of the two junk drawers in the kitchen with the intent to clear out a whole drawer.

I did away with a box of tapered candles, 20 tealight holders from my sister's wedding, butterfly bunting that was only good for getting tangled, and the light bulbs found a new home in the garage with the other fix-it items. I condensed the remaining items into one drawer, leaving the other drawer empty! The water bottles now have a permanent home and I get to keep my sanity.

  _________________________________________

3. Do not pass along discarded items to another person.

If you no longer have a use for an item, but have the mindset that it is too good to throw away or donate, do not pass it off to another family member or friend. You are merely passing the burden of storing the item to another person which is not fair.

I have a box near the front door of my home where everyone in my family puts things for donations. I regularly make trips to the Goodwill donation center in Montebello, for additional donation locations click here. For large bundles of trash, call Athens Disposal, (888) 336-6100, during regular business hours to schedule a bulky item pick up.

 _________________________________________

4. Organize sentimental items last.

These items take the longest to organize so it's okay to make save a pile of photos, paperwork, or family heirlooms to go through during the last leg of the organizing.

I still haven't gotten to organizing photos yet, but for now whenever I come across a photo I add it to the photograph pile. Ms. Kondo says there is no need to keep dozens of photos from the same event. One picture is enough to remember.

 _________________________________________

5. You do not need to buy organizing containers.

Once you get started organizing you will find you have plenty of boxes or containers in your home already; there is no need to spend money on something you already have.

These are boxes from Christmas cards, a cell phone, and sunglasses at the time they were too pretty to throw away, now they have a purpose!

My kids use the boxes to hold their colored pencils, and my husband found one to be perfect for holding business cards. I found that the more I organized and purged the more empty boxes I amassed. I now store empty boxes on top of the bookshelf for organizing later.

 _________________________________________

6. Store items standing up.

Standing items on their ends allows for easy visual access and takes up less surface area. If items are stacked in a tall pile it puts undo pressure on the items on the bottom of the stack, and only the items on top are clearly visible. This goes for clothes in drawers, books, makeup cases, everything.

I was able to fit a lot more office supply items into a file cabinet we have when I stood up the box of envelopes and the stapler upright instead of lying flat. My husband and I both now fold our shirts smaller and store them in nice rows in the drawers, we can see all the shirts at once rather than riffling through a flat pile.

 _________________________________________

7. Store similar items together.

It makes sense to have all related items stored in the same location.

One of the first places I organized was the bookshelves. Looking at the after picture here, the shelves still look pretty messy, but it is a lot better because all my things and the office supplies are on the left, and everything that is my husband's is arranged on the right. He was adamant that I not throw anything away, it's all precious you know! I arranged his side by category, books, movies, cables, and miscellaneous.

I used the same method to organize the office supplies. I eventually moved all the office supplies, paper, markers, envelopes, etc. into a newly organized and empty drawer in a file cabinet. No more wasted time searching a dozen different places for needed items, they are all together.

Family Fun at the Vineland Drive-In: Industry

This summer I was invited to the Vineland Drive-In to share a movie experience with my family. I invited another mom, and two of my daughters' friends to a double feature of Inside Out & the Minion movie.

We had an amazing time! The kids liked watching the movie from the back of the car, and running around the parking lot before & between the movies.

As adults we didn't have to worry about shushing the kids if they talked back to the movie, or if they became wiggly in their seats. I loved that I was able to save big by skipping the concession stand, and watching two movies for the price of one!

I highly recommend the Vineland Drive-In Theatre as a low-cost family friendly activity.

The Vineland Drive-In on a summer Tuesday night.

Tickets are $9 for anyone nine years old or older, $3-$3.25 for children ages 5-8. All children under the age of five are FREE! Nearly all shows are double features and guests are welcome to bring their own food.

To prepare for our trip I made sure the kids showered early, dressed in pajamas and loaded the car with all the blankets and pillows they could carry. I packed a basket of snacks and a cooler of drinks, and we stopped to pick up pizza on the way.

The girls finished their dinner before the first movie started, so we took them to the concession stand to use the restroom. The building has not only a snack bar and clean restrooms, but there is also a seating area, and vintage projectors and speakers from days-gone-by on display.

One of two vintage speakers on display.

The Vineland Drive-In Theatre manager Mr. Juan Gonzalez, was very welcoming and gave me a tour of the facility before the movies started. He said that two years ago the theatre upgraded to digital projectors. Playing a movie now is as easy as downloading  the file and clicking "play."

New digital projector.

Mr. Gonzalez's tips for a great family movie experience:
  1. The closer you park to the concession stand the better the sound quality. There are 15 minutes of ads and trailers, so if you want to move your car for better sound, you have time to check the sound before the movie starts.
  2. There are no ads or trailers for the second & third movie, those movies start right on time.
  3. The digital projection looks best on the two smaller fields.
  4. The busiest day is Saturday, especially opening movie weekends. There could be long lines to enter the theatre, arrive early.
  5. A vendor comes to sell snow cones on hot summer nights.
  6. The manager can make special announcements for proposals, birthdays, anniversaries, or lost people over the speakers. Announcements are made right before the movie, or after the credits.
MontebelloMom's tips for a great family drive-in experience:
  1. Pack a flashlight. It will come in handy on the way to the concession stand after the sun goes down, or if you drop something in the car.
  2. To decrease the chances of getting lost, count the aisles of cars you pass on the way to the bathroom.
  3. Take a bag to collect your family's trash. There are cans throughout the field, but it's easier to keep one handy and dispose of it when you get home.
  4. Bring camping chairs and blankets for anyone who wants to sit or lay outside the car.
  5. Pack enough food and drinks to keep the kids satisfied through two movies.
  6. Visit on a weekday to avoid the crowds.
birthday icon hatMr. Gonzalez says that the drive-in is available for birthday parties. If a parent wants to celebrate their child's birthday at the drive-in he will allow the birthday child, and a few guests, up to the projection room and give the birthday boy/girl the honor of starting the movie! He can be contacted via email here.

Vineland Drive-In theatre has been in operation for over 60 years. It's the busiest drive-in in all of California, and people come from as far away as San Diego to visit. It's one of only a few hundred drive-in theatres in the nation. It's truly an American experience that everyone should have at least once in their life. Take the family; they will have a good time.

Ojai & Fillmore Day Trip: Bees, Farms, Fish, & a Rocket Ship

Fillmore & Ojai Day Trip
Bees, Farms, Fish, & Rocket Ship Park

This fun day trip includes a drive up to Ojai with a three short stops in Fillmore along the way. Total driving time to the final destination is about two hours from downtown L.A.

______________________________________________________________

3176 Honey Lane (Hwy 126), Fillmore, CA 93015
Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm
Saturday-Sunday 9am-5pm

Signs advertising the store along the highway are tempting. Do not let the long dirt road deter you. Lots of samples await you, and there is an active hive encased in glass that lets you see the bees in action. I recommend honey sticks for the kids and a jar of clover honey to take home.

STOP #2
Fillmore Farm Stands
Highway 126, Fillmore, CA

A number of family owned farm stands line Highway 126 selling the freshest locally grown produce. One favorite is Francisco's Fruit Stand which also sells plants, nuts, and candy.

______________________________________________________________

STOP #3
612 E. Telegraph Road, Fillmore, CA 93016
Open Every Day, 7am-3pm

See how California raises trout to stock lakes and streams. Mr. MontebelloMom wasn't keen on the idea of visiting a fish farm at first, but quickly changed his mind after he realized how fun it was to feed the fish.

Bring a pocketful of dimes for the fish food pellet vending machine and a cup or small bucket to hold it all.

STOP #4
1301 Soule Park Road, Ojai
Open 7:30am-8pm
Parking $2-4 cash

Relive the good ole' days when you were a kid and the playground equipment was dangerous, high, unsafe, and totally fun! Soule Park in Ojai features vintage play structures from the 60s & 70s with a four-story rocket ship, ringed planet, submarine, & two arched swing sets.

My last visit was in 2012, but I spoke with a Ventura County Park Ranger today and he assured me that the vintage play structures are still standing. He said they were all recently painted and are looking good! http://www.ventura.org/inland-parks/soule-park-Ojai

Watch your kids! That slide is very high!

The park features BBQs, bathrooms, shaded picnic areas, and a fenced in dog park. I suggest packing a picnic, folding chairs, a blanket, and enjoying a meal under the shade trees.

I'd love to hear what you thought about all the stops along the way.
