ELAC Choir Concert: Saturday, May 11

Treat the family to a free night of classical music at East L.A. College. The concert starts at 7:30 and runs for one hour. The event is free, but donations are accepted. Parking is $2.

This would be a great way to introduce high school students to the music program at E.L.A.C. The building is brand new and the music program has made huge advances in the past few years. The professor  who leads the vocal courses said that if any high school students attend and were interested in the music program he would give them a tour of the backstage area and answer any questions the student or their parents may have. That and you get to hear some great music too!

Summer Day Camp: City of Whittier

Two programs are offered, the first is a traditional day camp that runs from 7am -6pm for a weekly fee. The other is a drop-in program open from Noon-5pm and costs $30 for the summer.

Pio Pico State Historic Park: Family Fun

A combination of donations from citizens and the city of Whittier saved Pio Pico State Park from closure in 2012. Before the scheduled closure I visited the park and was delighted to find that this often looked over park is a great family friendly gem.


Luscious green lawns spread out over several acres beg for a game of tag. Well kept gardens stimulate the aspiring gardener to consider native plants. A grape arbor provides an inviting place for friends to talk under the cool shade of vines. A children's garden anxiously awaits the sound of laughter and the patter of little feet.  The memories of days gone by can be heard in the echoes of footfalls on the wooden floor of the adobe.

The park and adobe are open every Saturday and Sunday and for special events throughout the year. Free admission and parking. For information about the adobe visit www.piopico.org.

The Children's Garden has a meandering path of stepping stones and an "archaeological pit" where children can search for hidden treasure! For an extra bit of fun, have your kids bring a sand shovel and very small 'treasures' to bury for other children to discover.

Celebrate whimsy in the 36th annual Doo Dah Parade in Pasadena on Saturday, April 27.

The parade begins at the corner of Colorado Blvd at San Gabriel at 11am and travels east to Altadena Drive and heads back to the starting line.

Street parking is available. Bring foldable chairs for comfort or bring a towel or blanket and sit on the curb.

Kids Bowl Free All Summer @ Beverly Lanes, 2013

This summer 2014 season kids can bowl for  3 games a day with shoe rental, Monday-Friday from Memorial Day through Labor Day at Beverly Lanes in Montebello and all AMF bowling lanes throughout the country for less than $22!

Youth Bowling League, Sign up Now at Beverly Lanes!

The bowling alley is starting a new youth league in July. Kids bowl three games each week, including shoe rental, for only $10 a week.

 

Bowling is a great sport for any child, but it's especially great for kids that are not a good fit for contact or team sports. Kids compete individually and can set goals such as beating their own high score. The alley manager said, "No one sits on the bench. In bowling, every child plays every game."

 

I like that parents have chairs to sit in while the children play and there is no worry about weather ruining a game.

Spring Cleaning with the Shops at Montebello

It's Spring! The weather has been wonderful and I love seeing my neighbors outside watering their lawns and people driving with the windows down.

Spring also means it's time to clean! For me that means going through the kid's clothes, matching lids to bowls in the Tupperware drawer, dusting every nook and cranny, and lots and lots of organizing.

The Shops at Montebello gave me a $50 Visa gift card and the assignment to get some spring cleaning done! I decided to use the gift card to tackle the toughest room in the house, my husband's bathroom, and give it a much needed makeover.

The room is small, barely 6'x7', which means that organization is the key to keeping the room in order at all times. As you can see from the before photos the shelves need the most attention and lack a decorative flair. You can see my handiwork in the after photos.

 I spruced up the room by tossing out empty containers, dusting the shelves, giving everything a once over with a cleaner and paper towel, organizing the reading material, mopping, and stocking two shelves with extra supplies.

To give it that extra special touch I made a trip to the Shops at Montebello mall with my Visa Gift Card and found some great things to spruce up the room at JCPenney, Bath & Body Works, & Hallmark.

 

 I purchased  towels, a basket to hold hygiene items, foaming hand soap, body wash, and a personalized photo frame for decoration. 

 

The whole makeover took less than an hour to complete. Total cost $59.43!

I love this, it's my absolute favorite! At first glance this looks like nice frame, but it's so much more! It's actually a photo gift! Printing and shipping is included in the price, so there is no additional cost from Shutterfly. Processing and shipping takes about a week, so this is definitely a gift you want to plan ahead for.

Lemon Festival: Upland, 4/26-4/28

When life gives you lemons, have a lemon festival! In it's 15th year, Upland Lemon Festival promises families a fun weekend including rides, food, crafts, music, and lemons!

Interested parties can audition for the "Lemon Idol Contest", Thursday 4/18, or Saturday, 4/20 or register to enter the "Lemon Dessert Contest", deadline to enter is Friday, 4/19. Contestants can also pucker up and enter the pie eating contest, there is one scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
