IKEA: Black Friday Weekend, Toys 50% off!

IKEA is hosting a Black Friday sales weekend.

Here are my two favorite sales:

 

My kids love playing in any tent like contraption. They make tents out of the couch cushions and blankets at least once a week. The circus tent at over 3 feet wide and 4 feet high is roomy enough for a couple of kids to play inside. For only $8, it's a great gift for families with 2 or more children. The price is only available on Sunday, 11/25.

 

The soft toys were on sale for 50% off from Friday, 11/23 though Sunday, 11/25. I absolutely adore the IKEA soft toys. All are designed for imaginative play. There are puppets, play sets, stuffed animals, dress up hats, and dolls. This is a good time to shop for Christmas presents but also for any birthdays for the coming year. My personal favorite is the DUKTIG set of play food. There are five sets of play food, a fruit basket, vegetable basket, breakfast set, dessert set, and a fish set. All are on sale for $4 each. For shoppers spending $100 or more at IKEA on Black Friday weekend, stop and have a meal in the restaurant. Save your restaurant receipt and the price of the meal will be deducted from your total at the register.

Caine's Arcade Play Day: Boyle Heights, 10/6

Last year a flash mob assembled to surprise Caine, a nine-year-old boy, who created several arcade games out of cardboard in his father's auto parts shop. You can watch the video here.

Since then a scholarship fund has been created to send Caine to college and Caine's Arcade has garnered worldwide notoriety.

This Saturday, October 6, on the one year anniversary of the flash mob, a Global Day of Play will be celebrated at Caine's Arcade.

The Hook Up Internet Cafe and Resource Center: Montebello

Nestled at the corner of Whittier Blvd and 10th Street is a newly opened resource center to serve the community. The Hook Up Internet Cafe & Resource Center offers resume assistance, job search services, textbook loan, study area, art and music sessions, Internet access, computers, and printing.

The center is run by Esperanza Ortega and William Valenzuela, an engaged couple who while participating in the Occupy movement at E.L.A.C. last year found that many students were homeless. Wanting to do something to assist their fellow students started the resource center.

There is no cost to use any of the services and special assistance is given to veterans and the homeless. The couple freely offers anything that individuals or families may need including food and clothing.

Currently the Hook Up is funded out of pocket by Ortega and Valenzuela who are in the process of acquiring non-profit status for the center. Monetary donations as well as donations of non-perishable food, personal hygiene items, baby formula, children's books, textbooks, as well as clothing and shoes for adults, children, and babies are welcomed.

I've never participated in a consignment sale but my friend, Yvonne, buys and sells at this sale.

 

She said that the sellers set the prices and the last day of the sale, many sellers mark their items for half price. Yesterday Yvonne bought a really great bed for her daughter that came with an attached bookshelf, bed frame, and mattress for only $110.

Community & Senior Center, Now Open @ Potrero Heights Park

 

After more than a year of construction, the Community & Senior Center is open to the public. The center is owned and operated by the Los Angeles County Department of Community and Senior Services.

 The center features a large room available for events, classes, clubs, or meetings.

 

Currently the offerings of classes is limited to an art class, computer class, and crochet class for Seniors. A county run toy lending program is available on Tuesday afternoons for children. Six  computers with Internet access are available for public use.

The Community Center Director, Liliana Garcia, welcomes volunteers who are available to host classes and workshops for the community.

 

Future classes and events are scheduled including movie days, bingo, and fitness classes.

 

The center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30-5:00pm.

Free Admission to Botanic Garden, Sunday, 9/9

California became the 31st state on September 9, 1850.

Celebrate California's Admission Day, the day our state was admitted to the Union, this Sunday at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens in Claremont.

Enjoy free admission on Sunday, September 9  to the 86 acre site and if you chose, sign up to become a member of the gardens and get extra visitor passes with membership. Regular admission is $8 for adults and $4 for children.
