Bethel Church Health and Resource Fair: Sunday, March 27

Bethel Church in Bellflower is holding it's annual Community Resource and Health Fair this Sunday, March 27, 2011. The fair is open from 11am - 3pm and is free! The fair will provide free medical, dental, vision screenings, and massages. Spanish translation is provided.

I attended this event last year and the whole family had a great time. Some of the activities we participated in were:
  • blood-mobile donation
  • sonogram of arteries in our neck to check for warning signs of stroke
  • blood glucose test to check for diabetes
  • blood pressure test
  • raffles (I won a $10 Ralphs' gift card!)
  • playground
  • jump-bouncy houses and slides
  • puppet show
  • child care room, the kids got to pick a book to take home from a massive selection of free books
  • lunch catered by Subway
  • visited the vendor booths and got lots of pamphlets, free pens, magnets, etc.
The church does a lot to make sure children are active and entertained while parents participate in the health screenings. Last year there were specialized tests for seniors to check for balance and stability. The health fair is a great place to discover new resources in the community. Free Baby and Kids Play Gym Class at MyGym and Gymboree

Gymboree and MyGym are play gyms designed to exercise the bodies and minds of children from birth to school age.

The enrollment fee for these programs start around $75 a month, require a minimum two month commitment, and have such detailed fine print about termination of membership it will give you a headache. However, both Gymboree and MyGym offer a free trial class!

I've taken my little one to both play gyms for a trial class and we both had a lot of fun!

The nearest MyGym is in Puente Hills and there are Gymboree gyms in South Pasadena and Monrovia. You can sign up for a free trial class online and there is no obligation to sign up for membership.

Sharkey's Cuts for Kids: Not just a haircut, an experience!

July 2012: The Montebello Sharkey's location is now closed. Thenext location is in Chino Hills.

A new hair salon geared for kids is open in Montebello. Sharkey's Cuts for Kids located in the AMC/Sears shopping center has been cutting hair since November. I took my kids for their first visit last week.

Lime green colored walls and large colorful daisies adorn the shop. Three cars, used as barber chairs line the right side of the salon. Children can choose to sit in Lightning McQueen, a Barbie Jeep, or a Mini Cooper for their cut while watching a video on their own TV.

The left side of the salon is for older kids or adults. Two traditional barber chairs have large screen televisions connected to cable TV and X-box and Nintendo gaming systems.

The back of the salon is reserved for glamour girl style birthday parties.

Complete with a hair and makeup station, wall of dress-up gowns, mini-nail salon, and eating area, girls can celebrate their birthday like a star!

I asked my kids what they thought of Sharkey's and a simultaneous, "Yay!" was their response. A visit to Sharkey's would be perfect for every haircut or special occasions. My kids can hardly wait for their hair to grow out so they can play at the salon again. Mention MontebelloMom.com and get a $3 discount and ask about the loyalty card, every 10th haircut is free!

Boys cuts are $18. Includes wash, cut, blow-dry, and style. Girls cuts are $20-$23 depending on hair type. Includes wash, cut, blow-dry, style, and nail polish manicure. My kids all came out with a complimentary lollipop and Sharkey's balloon too!

Glamour Girl Parties are $325 for two hours of fun! 12 kids can enjoy getting their hair styled, face made up, nail polish manicures, and dress up time. Party includes fashion show with photos, paper goods, pizza or sandwiches with juice and soda for the guests. Invitations, thank you notes, and party favors are provided.

Donate your hair to Locks of Love and get a free haircut at Sharkey's! Click here for more information.
