Lowe's Free Build and Grow Workshops for Kids!

Lowe's hosts a free hands on building clinic for kids once or twice a month. Children in grades 1-5 can put together a project to take home. Here are examples of some of past projects that my kids enjoyed:

Tables are set up in outside the front of the store. Families check in with the Lowe's employee and kids receive an apron, hammer, and a kit. Directions are included in the kit. When the project is complete, kids return the hammer and receive a patch for their apron.

At the Pico Rivera location there are tables, but as you can see from everyone working on the floor, the hammers work better on the concrete. I usually bring beach towels or a large blanket to put on the floor where we work.
Build and Grow clinics are limited to the number of kits available. Register online to reserve a spot for your child, or if you are feeling lucky, walk in and take an open spot. Usually there are enough kits from no-shows for the walk-in participants, if not I've seen the employees hand out extra old kits so no one is left disappointed.

To see the next kit & to register visit http://lowesbuildandgrow.com/.

Scholastic Warehouse Sales: Half-price books!

Remember Scholastic book orders? The teacher would pass the newspaper print flyer out every month and you had to fill in the quantity and price in those little boxes. I vividly remember scraping together 95 cents or a few dollars to buy the latest Babysitter's Club or Judy Blume book. Earlier today I just relived the excitement of book clubs once again.

A few times a year Scholastic holds a Book Fair warehouse sale. The sale is for any person affiliated with a school, specifically school district employees, home school directors, teachers, Book Fair Chairpersons, and school volunteers. All books are heavily discounted and a coupon for $10 or $25  is given with pre-registration.

I attended this year's warehouse sale in Irwindale and was surprised at the immensity of the warehouse and quantity of books. There are rows and rows of books, most discounted 50% off. There is a second level with even more books! I found books from pre-school through adult in every genre as low as $1.

The warehouse is located in Irwindale and has extended the sale days through May 30. Hours are 9am-5pm, closed Sunday. Remember, only individuals affiliated with a school can shop. Online pre-registration is encouraged, registration is available on-site. You cannot check out without registering. Shopping carts are available. Cash or credit cards accepted.

There were rows of books just like this one that spanned the warehouse from front to back.

I bought these 18 brand new children's books for less than $42, making the average value of each book $2.33!
15 books were half-price, 3 were 25% off.

If you are interested in books that are less expensive, you'll want to visit  East Los Angeles Library during their semi-annual Used Book Fair. Usually held in April and August. Children's books are as low as a quarter and many are nearly new. Click here for more information.

ELAC Choir Concert: Saturday, May 11

Treat the family to a free night of classical music at East L.A. College. The concert starts at 7:30 and runs for one hour. The event is free, but donations are accepted. Parking is $2.

This would be a great way to introduce high school students to the music program at E.L.A.C. The building is brand new and the music program has made huge advances in the past few years. The professor  who leads the vocal courses said that if any high school students attend and were interested in the music program he would give them a tour of the backstage area and answer any questions the student or their parents may have. That and you get to hear some great music too!

Pio Pico State Historic Park: Family Fun

A combination of donations from citizens and the city of Whittier saved Pio Pico State Park from closure in 2012. Before the scheduled closure I visited the park and was delighted to find that this often looked over park is a great family friendly gem.

Luscious green lawns spread out over several acres beg for a game of tag. Well kept gardens stimulate the aspiring gardener to consider native plants. A grape arbor provides an inviting place for friends to talk under the cool shade of vines. A children's garden anxiously awaits the sound of laughter and the patter of little feet.  The memories of days gone by can be heard in the echoes of footfalls on the wooden floor of the adobe.

The park and adobe are open every Saturday and Sunday and for special events throughout the year. Free admission and parking. For information about the adobe visit www.piopico.org.

Pio Pico State Historic Park
Saturday & Sunday, 9:30am -4:00pm
Adobe Hours: 10:00am - 3:30pm
6003 Pioneer Blvd, Whittier, CA 90606

Pio Pico Park. The adobe home is on the left. The grape arbor is straight down the path.

The Children's Garden has a meandering path of stepping stones and an "archaeological pit" where children can search for hidden treasure! For an extra bit of fun, have your kids bring a sand shovel and very small 'treasures' to bury for other children to discover.
